Singer Mary Martin Remembered Onstage
Performers and audience enjoy the nostalgia.
Entering the stage dressed as Peter Pan accompanied by narrator Ruthe McKeown and pianist Stephen Goldstein, songstress Lisa Berman captivated the audience at the Syosset Public Library Saturday night singing legendary actress and singer Mary Martin's hit tunes. The performance "Berman Does Martin" included music from South Pacific, Peter Pan and The Sound of Music.
Berman said Martin was an unappreciated icon.
"She originated so many roles that made other actresses very famous, like Julie Andrews in The Sound of Music," Berman said. "By performing these songs, we are telling Mary Martin's story. I am not trying to be her, I am just a presentation of her music. Mary Martin was a magnificent performer."

Goldstein added, "I remember being in front of the TV watching Mary Martin perform Peter Pan. It was the greatest thing in the world to watch her."
With a hint of sexiness, Berman strolled through the audience serenading male audience members with the song "My Heart Belongs to Daddy." Their huge smiles showed their gratitude.

With her unique vocal range, Berman delighted the audience and encouraged their participation during a sing-along to "I Won't Grow Up."
During Berman's costume changes, which included a sailor suit, a dirndl dress and a sleek black gown with a red feather boa, McKeown kept the evening flowing by giving the crowd interesting facts about Martin: She was born in Weatherford, Texas, her son is actor Larry Hagman of Dallas fame and she was 40 years old when she first performed Peter Pan.
Audience member Marjorie Parness of Plainview fondly remembers Martin's songs from her childhood.
"I admire Mary Martin's work," she said. "It brings back good memories to hear these songs."
After meeting at Plaza Theatrical Productions in Lynbrook years ago, the trio agreed to perform together. Their past performances include "Berman Does Merman" for Ethel Merman, and a similar tribute to Judy Garland is in the works.
