1 Coyote Killed, Search Continues For 2nd

The dead animal is being sent to Albany for a rabies test.

YONKERS, NY — One coyote that had been menacing the area was captured and killed in Yonkers at the Dunwoodie Golf Course Thursday. The dead animal was sent to Albany to be tested for rabies.

Another coyote is at large, and so far, a dog was killed and some people were injured, lohud.com said.

Officials in Hastings-on-Hudson asked people to stay out of wooded areas and to keep pets inside if possible.

Greenburgh Supervisor Paul Feiner said municipalities are limited as to what they can do about coyotes.

“The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has very clear restrictions when dealing with wildlife,” he said. “We can euthanize a sick coyote, that’s about it. We cannot remove a coyote as only licensed wildlife trappers are allowed to do so. Their behavior must be ‘bold,’ ‘aggressive’ or ‘threatening’.”
