John Herighty, Jr. : Dec. 21, 1949 - Jan. 21, 2011

Jay Herighty, a lifelong resident of Tarrytown, died Jan. 21, 2011 at Phelps Memorial Hospital in Sleepy Hollow. He was a young 61 years of age. He was born in Tarrytown on Dec. 21, 1949. He was predeceased by his father, John J. (Big John) and his loving mother Nellie.

Jay graduated from Irvington High School in 1968 and went on to serve his country in the United States Navy-Seabee Division during the Vietnam War. In 1972, Jay began working as an equipment operator for Consolidated Edison. He later moved on to the Town of Greenburgh Highway Department in 1973, where he worked for 34 years, retiring as General Foreman in 2007. Following his retirement, Jay remained very active as a School Bus Driver.

He was a life active member of the Tarrytown Fire Department, Consolidated Engine 77 for over 43 years. He was a former captain and former warden of the company. Nothing meant more to Jay than spending time with his family and doing whatever he could to help others.

He is survived by “his best friend, his everything”, his wife of 39 years, the former Kathleen Clark; his daughter Kristen Grzan (Marin) and his son John (Daniela). He was the dear brother of Noreen Nee (Tom) and loving uncle of Katelyn, Meghan and Tommy Nee. “Dearest Jay” is also survived by his cousins Eileen and Patrick Pilla as well as many other cousins and dear friends.

Visitation will be at Coffey Funeral Home on Wednesday from 7-9 p.m. and Thursday from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. His Funeral Mass will be Friday at Transfiguration Church at 10 a.m. with interment to follow in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery.
