Freeze Tonight, Snow on Thursday Possible for Sleepy Hollow

TARRYTOWN, NY — Wasn’t it in the mid 80s last week in parts of the Hudson Valley? Now, northern Westchester has a Freeze Warning in place and we’re talking about seeing the first snowflakes of the year possibly on Thursday.
A lot can change quickly with weather as we know in New York and this latest forecast proves that. The National Weather Service has issued two statements:

• Freeze Warning in effect from October 26, 02:00 AM EDT until October 26, 09:00 AM EDT
• Hazardous Weather Outlook

And, yes weather forecasters predict that the area may see its first widespread snowflakes of the year on Thursday. No one is predicting any accumulation but snowflakes could be visible in much of the region for a period of time Thursday before the snowflakes turn to all rain.

Hudson Valley Weather is calling it a "Flakey Forecast." Not just because of the snow but because of the uncertainties, including the strength of the cold air coming in and the timing of the storm.

"October snows are rare and require the alignment of multiple atmospheric ingredients," said Bill Potter of Hudson Valley Weather. "If any one of these factors are missing… it doesn’t happen, especially across the lower elevations. If you are above 2000′ in the Catskills, the chance of snow Thursday AM is likely. Accumulations across the higher elevations may exceed 3 inches… while the lower terrain may see a trace to an inch, depending on elevation and surface."

Here’s the updated forecast via the National Weather Service for Putnam, Rockland and northern Westchester:

A Freeze Warning is in effect from 2 a.m. to 9 a.m. Wednesday. Then an 80 percent chance of precipitation starts off Thursday with snow changing to rain.

Once the rain clears out early Friday, it looks sunny and dry Friday, Saturday and Sunday with temps in the low 50s — perfect for weekend activities.
