NYIC Action Endorses Mondaire Jones for Congress in NY-17

Mondaire Jones Supports Justice, Opportunity, and Fairness for ALL New Yorkers

New York, NY (May 26, 2020) – NYIC Action, the sister 501(c)4 organization to the New York Immigration Coalition, today announced its endorsement of Mondaire Jones for Congress in New York’s 17th Congressional District.

Steve K. Choi, Executive Director of NYIC Action said, “Immigrant New Yorkers make up more than a third of essential workers across the state–from healthcare professionals to farmworkers to cleaners–and yet, too many are struggling to feed and care for their families. NYIC Action is committed to electing leaders who actively seek fairness and justice for New York’s immigrants –and who are unafraid to fight to ensure opportunity for all during good times and in bad times, like now. New Yorkers of all backgrounds and immigration status deserve to have their voices heard–and we believe these are the candidates who will best represent our collective interests in Albany and Washington, D.C.”

The endorsements were made following the completion of a survey by candidates and their staff. The surveys focused on five distinct policy areas: expanding our democracy, racial justice, health and welfare, education, and immigrant justice. It also asked candidates to outline their top 3 priorities for immigrants and asked how campaigns plan to reach out to immigrant voters.

“I’m humbled to be endorsed by New York Immigration Coalition Action, an organization that stands up for the rights of all immigrants throughout the state and ensures that their voices are heard,” said NY-17 Democratic Congressional Candidate Mondaire Jones. “Too often, immigrant communities and communities of color are left out of the political process and I’m proud to stand alongside NYIC Action in the fight to change that. I know that bold and progressive immigration reform is long overdue and I can’t wait to work to enact those changes when elected to Congress.”

If elected to Congress, Mondaire will always stand with immigrant communities and work to ensure that our immigration system centers their dignity and humanity. He has pledged to cosponsor the DREAM Act (H.R. 6) to codify DACA, help create a pathway to citizenship for people who are currently living undocumented in this country, stop deportations, institute comprehensive reforms to our immigration process, and end the racist and inhumane practice of family separation. Mondaire will also fight to restore and strengthen the asylum system, and increase the cap for refugees, so that people fleeing conflict, instability, and violence can find safe harbor in the United States. His platform centers the principles of racial, social, and economic justice, so that every single person, including members of immigrant communities, has housing, health care, and quality education as human rights. It is the strongest platform in his race.

About NYIC Action: NYIC Action (nyicaction.org) was originally formed in 2010 as a sister organization to the New York Immigration Coalition (NYIC), a 501(c)(3) coalition with 200 member organizations across New York State. In order to increase the political potency of the immigrant vote, Immigrant Action endorses candidates and elected officials who stand up for immigrant communities and against anti-immigrant opponents. Immigrant Action engages in targeted advocacy on specific immigrant-related issues such as legislative scorecards, pointed advocacy flyers highlighting individual elected officials’ stances, and intensive grassroots and direct lobbying of elected officials.

About Mondaire: Mondaire Jones is a 33-year-old former litigator in the Westchester County Law Department and former Department of Justice staffer during the Obama Administration. A resident of South Nyack, he is running to represent New York's 17th Congressional District. A product of East Ramapo public schools, Mondaire was raised in Section 8 housing and on food stamps in the Village of Spring Valley by a single mother who worked multiple jobs to provide for their family. He later graduated from Stanford University and Harvard Law School. He is a co-founder of the nonprofit Rising Leaders, Inc. and has previously served on the NAACP’s National Board of Directors and on the board of the New York Civil Liberties Union. Mondaire is a progressive running to fight for bold solutions to our biggest problems: a Green New Deal, tuition-free public college and student debt forgiveness, Medicare for All, and a full restoration of the SALT deduction for families in Westchester and Rockland.
