Tarrytown Gourmet to Close Saturday

The specialty grocery and hangout for local residents is calling it quits.

After providing Tarrytown with specialty grocery items for 16 years, Tarrytown Gourmet on North Broadway is closing this Saturday.

“It is tragic for all of Tarrytown, “ said Alaric Young, Tarrytown resident and frequent patron of the establishment. “It’s another empty store and more unemployed people.”

The diverse supermarket was a staple on North Broadway, offering a mix of international and local products like French jam, Belgian chocolate, domestic craft beer and fair trade coffee. Their deli and cold lunch items would also lure customers to grab-and-go, or sit outside for hours at the few tables and stools out front.

Tarrytown Gourmet employees could not confirm whether or not there would be a new tenant in the building, they merely stated that the store would be closed for good on Saturday and that there are no current plans for trying to move to another location.

All items in the store are now being sold for half the original price, in order to offload the remaining merchandise in the final days. It has been evident to shoppers that the store is closing, just by noticing the relatively empty shelves and the shut down fish and meat counter in the back of the store.

Many locals were upset to get the confirmation that the store would be closing.

“It’s very popular with the Tarrytown people,” said Young.

Although it has not been confirmed as to why the Gourmet is closing, locals suspect high rents and the niche customer base made it impossible for the small businesses to prosper.

“It’s sad to see something upscale in Tarrytown unable to survive," said Maria Chester, originally from Tarrytown and now a resident of Los Angeles.
