The Dead Women of Sleepy Hollow Cemetery Get Their Own App
Enough with Washington Irving, the Headless Horseman and Rip Van Winkle; let's hear it for the legendary ladies.
Rama, an iPhone app from Brooklyn-based publisher Crimson Bamboo, allowing users to take narrative, historical walking tours that show them how the locations they visit actually once looked in the past, has come out with a “Sleepy Hollow’s Women” edition.
The app, which is free to users from today, October 28, to the 31st (after which it will cost $1.99), promises to take users on a “mini-hike through the notoriously haunted Sleepy Hollow Cemetery,” visiting the graves of the many historic women laid to rest here.
“Most people know and love Sleepy Hollow for Washington Irving, the Headless Horseman and Rip Van Winkle,” tour author and Ossining resident, Sarah Whitten‐Grigsby, explained, “but I was intrigued to discover that there are many heroic women laid to rest here; women who changed the course of history in remarkably positive ways. Even the most famous men interred here gave primary credit for their success to a wife or mother.”

Some of the women included aren’t as heroic as scandalous, because, Whitten-Grigsby said, “We all thirst for information about badly‐behaved women, too.” Featured women include those you may recognize (Leona Helmsley) and those you may not (Sadie Gompers).
The tour covers a total walking distance of about 1.7 miles and takes about 80 minutes to complete. Follow this link to download Rama for free from iTunes, http://bit.ly/iTunesRama, and then choose the Sleepy Hollow tour from here, http://www.crimsonbamboo.com/ramatours/.
