Westchester County Is One of the 'Most Expensive' Places to Live in America

The county ranked higher than the NYC metro area overall in a recent list by FindTheBest.

Westchester County clocked in at No. 5 in FindTheBest’s list of “The 15 most expensive places to live in America.”

The rankings were determined by a cost of living index created by FindTheBest based on 2013 family budget estimates for housing, taxes, healthcare, childcare, transportation, and other necessities from the Economic Policy Institute to compare, in over 600 counties and metro areas across America, according to the article.

The average overall index for US cities and metro areas is 100. If a city has an index of 120, that means it is 20 percent more expensive than average, and if a city has an index of 80 that means it is 20 percent cheaper than average.

None of Westchester’s indices fall below the average cost for all U.S. cities—its transportation index is its lowest at 105.

According to Business Insider, Westchester—the land of countless commuters—is “known for its great school districts, but also for sky-high taxes, especially property taxes.”

Westchester even beat out the New York City metro area overall, which is ranked No. 8.

But it was outranked by Nassau and Suffolk counties on Long Island, which collectively took the No. 1 spot on the list.
