Archetypal Images: The Odyssey Presented by Storyboard Artist Mike Sheinkopf, Thursday, Sept 10 at 7PM

Explore the 2,700-year legacy of Homer’s, The Odyssey, throughout art history. See the story depicted throughout history, from ancient Greek amphorae to the Neoclassical period and the modern day as inspiration and adaptation overlap.

This lecture will sail through Homer’s epic poem and how it has been interpreted across a variety of media and art historical contexts. Iconic scenes of the encounter with Polyphemus, the Sirens, Odysseus’ reunion with his loyal dog, Argos, and more will be investigated.

Ancient Greek pottery and amphorae depicting scenes will ground the discussion of Proto-Attic artwork in a conceptual analysis of form, function and special decoration.Paintings and illustrations from the Neoclassical era will reinforce the choice of certain motifs and imagery that adaptations repeat not as a cliché, but as necessary archetypal symbology.The utility of “The Odyssey” at certain historical junctions and crossroads will also be explored.
