The Study by Toast

Retired U.S. Air Force Colonel, B-52 aviator and author Trey Morriss comes to The Study for a conversation about DOOM 34, his firsthand account of the once-classified 35-hour B-52 mission that helped launch Operation Desert Storm. The conversation will explore leadership, teamwork and performance under extraordinary pressure, as well as Morriss's later service flying 32 combat missions over Afghanistan and Iraq following 9/11. Held the day after the 25th anniversary of September 11, the event will also offer a firsthand perspective on the military response that followed the attacks. Q&amp;A and book signing to follow.

A Faculty Book Talk Extravaganza with live music and dance

The Atelier Art School and Gallery

Painting en plein air is a French expression meaning “in the open air.” It’s not so much a style as it is the effects of the weather, changing light and time constraints on the artist.Plein air painting gained popularity during the 19th century, particularly among the Impressionist painters, who sought to capture the effects of light and color in the natural world. Artists such as Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, and Camille Pissarro were known for their plein air works, which often featured vibrant colors and loose brushstrokes to convey the atmosphere and mood of the scenes they painted.
Fred Mendelsohn, your instructor, will guide students through the steps of creating a successful painting “en plein air” using pastel, oil, acrylic or watercolor paints. He will share his creative process, sources of inspiration, and tools and techniques. The beginning stages, consisting of preliminary sketches and blocking in, will be discussed and practiced, as will elements further into the painting process: color harmony, value and atmospheric perspective. 
Frederic Mendelsohn, is a modern-day Renaissance man — neurologist, philanthropist, author, musician and artist. He is the holder of both a BA and MA degree as well as a MD, andis predominantly a landscape artist utilizing both oil and egg tempera paints. With over four decades of experience, Frederic has studied extensively with the Art Students League in NYC, The Art League of Long Island, New School University, and Marymount College, and is a proud member of the Long Island Museum Artist Guild as well as the Setauket Artist Group and the North Shore Art Guild.
The fee for this 4-hour workshop is $110. A variety of ability levels are welcomed and the materials list will be available on our website when registering. Students will meet in the parking lot of the Frank Melvile Park, in Setauket, for this workshop. If time permits, you will return to The Atelier to review and critique the day's work in studio light.

Recycling, a NYS registered electronic waste recycling facility, will be in Emma Clark Library's parking lot to help.Bring your used computers, cell phones, laptops, servers, wire &amp; cable,
scrap metal, circuit boards, batteries, printers, hard drives &amp; storage
devices, power tools, small appliances, small electronics, keyboards/mice,
stereos, flat screen TVs and computer monitors, cameras, and more. Your hard-drives
and old cell phones can also be shredded on site (if possible, please remove
the hard-drive from your computer before your arrival). Batteries (regular, rechargeable, lithium, and car batteries) are accepted, but please tape the terminals.Not
accepted: CRT (Tube) TVs and CRT (Tube) computer monitors, lightbulbs, paper,
general garbage, liquids, paints, containers containing gases, medical waste,

The Jay Heritage Center in Rye, New York will celebrate America at 250 with a toast to Jay Medal honorees Pulitzer Prize-winning author Annette Gordon-Reed, the Carl M. Loeb University Professor at Harvard University and award-winning Lincoln historian Harold Holzer.
The Jay Medal for Service was created in 2012 to recognize individuals who demonstrate a selfless spirit of commitment to and engagement with their community mirroring the multifaceted contributions of John Jay and his descendants. These honorees have demonstrated through their life's work that our shared narratives as a country, complicated as they are, can be better illuminated through the highest caliber of ongoing scholarship and advocacy. Honorees are selected for their excellence in the fields of American history, environmental stewardship, social justice or civic engagement.
Joining the celebration will be Chief Judge of the State of New York and the New York Court of Appeals, Honorable Rowan D. Wilson and historian and philanthropist Elihu Rose who will present the awards at JHC's annual Soirée. Special guests will include David Blight, Frank Cogliano, Joanne Freeman, and Beverly Gage.

The Jay Medal Soirée will be held Saturday, September 19, 2026 at the Jay Estate from 5:30-9:30pm. Cocktails, dinner, award ceremony and dancing. Cocktail Attire.
