New Technology in Emma Clark Library's Children's Department
New mobile devices and the hottest gaming accessory for iPad, Osmo, now available at the library.

Emma Clark Library has recently replaced the old computers for kids ages 5 and under with brand new tablets and headphones. Emma Clark Librarians researched the best games and apps and loaded these 5th generation iPads with recommendations, such as Peppa Pig, Toca Town, TallyTots, and Monkey Preschool. Mobile devices are the wave of the future, and toddlers and preschoolers are already learning how to use this – now necessary – technology.
Additionally, the library has installed a gaming accessory for the iPad called Osmo, developed by former Google employees. Osmo’s slogan is “Play Beyond the Screen”, and it claims to promote social intelligence and creative thinking. Children may gather and play together with this cooperative learning tool. It comes with a “reflector” which snaps over the iPad’s camera, a “base”, and a “playing field” which turns the surface into an imaginative and interactive play space.
Osmo brings the virtual world back into the real world. It encourages play with “real people and real objects.” For example, one Osmo game called Tangram allows children to arrange actual puzzle pieces into shapes that match what is on the screen. There are also games with tangible letters that relate to the screen. Kids may play alone or with a sibling, friend, or parent. Osmo recommends its games for kids 6 and up. It is also suitable for younger children with parental guidance, as it requires some reading skill.

Osmo received wonderful reviews from such notable publications as The Wall Street Journal and USA Today. Emma Clark is proud to be one of the first libraries to offer this exciting, innovative way to promote tangible play and provide a whole new digital experience to its patrons.
Both of these stations are available at any time for patron use during library hours.
