Seawolves Fall to Brown 33-30 in Double Overtime

Stony Brook holds lead most of game.

Stony Brook took an early lead and held on for most of the game, but couldn't stop a Brown comeback that resulted in a 33-30 double overtime win for the Bears on Saturday.

The Seawolves (1-2) struck first, leading 7-0 lead on a 67-yard touchdown pass to Matt Brevi with an extra point kicked by Wesley Skiffington about three minutes into the game. Brown (1-0) got a 30-yard field goal in the first quarter, and then went ahead 10-7 on a 16-yard touchdown pass to Jimmy Saros with 11:53 left in the second quarter. But the Bears' lead lasted all of 17 seconds before Brock Jackolski ran 47 yards for a score that put Stony Brook back on top. The Seawolves led 14-10 at halftime.

Miguel Maysonet expanded that lead to 20-10 midway through the third quarter with a 16-yard touchdown run. But the turning point for the Seawolves seemed to come on the next play, when Brown's Mark Kachmer scored with a 91-yard kick return.

Stony Brook still had a 20-17 lead, but after giving up that kick return, the Seawolves' offense seemed a little off. Quarterback Michael Coulter threw two interceptions, and after Brown tied the game with 9:55 left in regulation, Skiffington's 49-yard game-winning field goal attempt with nine seconds left in the game was wide.

"We didn't execute on some chances late in the game," head coach Chuck Priore said. "We drove into their territory twice in the fourth quarter, and didn't come away with anything."

In the first overtime, Jackolski produced a touchdown to tie the game at 27 and force a second overtime. Skiffington's 36-yard field goal but the Seawolves up 30-27, but the defense couldn't stop Brown from scoring the winning touchdown.

Jackolski finished his second straight game with over 100 yards rushing, totaling 139 yards on 21 carries. Brevi had nine catches for 157 yards. Coulter made 15 of 22 pass attempts for 175 yards.

The Seawolves were again without key starter Edwin Gowins. Next up for Stony Brook is Massachusetts (2-1) on Saturday, Sept. 25 at 6 p.m.
