Woman Dies In Suffolk Home Fire; Man And Infant Injured

The father saved his son and was able to get himself out, but the child's mother could not escape the home, police say.

EAST SETAUKET, NY — A woman is dead, and a man and infant were injured following an East Setauket house fire early Friday, Suffolk police said.

Sixth Precinct officers arrived to the Old Town Road home around 12:01 a.m. after a 911 caller reported a fire.

Stephen Ortner, 30, a resident of the home, escaped through a second-floor window onto a roof ledge and handed his 10-month-old son to a passerby below, who then handed the child to rescuers, police said. Ortner was then able to climb down to the ground.

Lisa Ostrowski, 31, the mother of the child, was not able to escape the home and was found dead once the fire was extinguished. Ortner, who tried to rescue Ostrowski, and his son were brought to Stony Brook University Hospital, where the father was treated for serious injuries and his child for non-life threatening injuries.

No one else lived in the home, and no one else was injured, police said.
