📰 News we're reading

1. A NY Hospital Tried To Close Its Birthing Center. This City United To Fight Back. (kffhealthnews.org) — Troy's only hospital birthing center was nearly shut down, which would have forced local families to travel to Albany for deliveries, but a broad bipartisan campaign kept it open. Residents, doulas, faith leaders, and officials from Troy and Rensselaer County pressed Trinity Health and state regulators, ultimately winning funding and a reversal that preserves nearby maternity care for Troy families.

2. Registration opens for 79th Troy Turkey Trot (news10.com) — Registration is now open for the 79th Troy Turkey Trot, giving Troy runners and families plenty of time to sign up for the 5K, 10K, Grade School Mile, or Community Turkey Walk. Packet pickup will be held at RPI's East Campus Athletic Village, and Thanksgiving morning races start at 8 a.m., continuing a tradition that raised over $40,000 for local groups last year.

3. Another Capital Region community bans kratom; doctor calls for statewide ban (cbs6albany.com) — Rensselaer County, which includes Troy, has voted to ban the sale of kratom, with the measure now awaiting a final public hearing and the county executive's signature. A local addiction specialist is urging New York State to go further with a statewide ban, arguing both natural and synthetic kratom are dangerous and fuel the opioid epidemic.

4. Kingston, Ellenville men arrested in federal crackdown (dailyfreeman.com) — Federal agents recently raided multiple Troy locations, including an apartment-turned-illegal marijuana shop, seizing pounds of cannabis, cash, and equipment as part of a wider Capital Region crackdown. Several suspects from Albany and Ithaca face federal drug, firearms, and trafficking charges, with Troy Police assisting the FBI and U.S. Attorney's Office in the ongoing Operation Tidal Wave 2.0 investigation.

5. Sheriff: Albany County investigator charged after misuse of Flock data (timesunion.com) — An Albany County sheriff's investigator is accused of misusing Flock license-plate camera data thousands of times to track acquaintances, intensifying regional concerns about the technology's abuse. The case resonates in Troy, where residents and the Democratic council have already clashed with Mayor Carmella Mantello over paying Flock, reflecting deep local skepticism about mass vehicle surveillance and privacy protections.
