Harry Connick, Jr. seemed to have done it all over his remarkable three-decade career – concerts and albums of music spanning jazz, pop, and holiday songs, a Grammy win (one of three) for his unforgettable soundtrack for When Harry Met Sally, acting roles in films like Independence Day and Hope Floats, television’s Will & Grace and Emmy Award-winning music specials, Tony nominations for his work on Broadway as both an actor and a composer, and more. What remained unrealized until now was the project that would be his most personal of all – a creative journey in celebration of his beloved mother.
Connick joins us on the full launch of that journey and the publication of his first book, Babe: Elaboratio, part of a multimedia work that also includes an original symphonic piece by the same name. Together they capture what Connick describes as “a swirl of truths and legends” as he remembers his mother, affectionally known as “Babe.” Born in the Bronx to Jewish immigrant parents, Babe died of ovarian cancer when Connick was just 13. He shares the story of his mother’s lifelong dream for her young son — already a prodigy — to perform on the stage of Carnegie Hall. Hear him talk about what it was like to fulfill that dream last May, when he performed his new orchestral work in the sold-out hall on what would have been his mother’s 100th birthday. And hear him reflect on the woman who shaped him, and the ways a mother’s love can reverberate across time and find new life through creative expression.
