As part of the ongoing exhibition Maritime City the Museum regularly rotates objects to give you new opportunities to explore the collections and archives and to support ongoing collections care.
Highlights include an impressive large-scale ship model of the tugboat Gowanus that was built by a longtime crew member; a carving of the famous War of 1812 Bellamy Eagle featuring the “Don’t Give Up the Ship” motto; historic artifacts connected to the green coffee trade; and new arrays of visitor favorites—scrimshaw, glass plate negatives, stereographic cards, and vintage toys.
Spanning three floors, Maritime City features 540 carefully selected items that reveal how New York’s identity as a global capital of culture and commerce is deeply rooted in its origins as a seaport. With this rotation, visitors will encounter a wide range of materials—from intricately crafted ship models and rare China Trade goods to oil paintings, scrimshaw, early 20th-century photographs, and hand-colored prints—that reflect the depth and diversity of the Museum’s collections.
