What does principled political leadership look like — and what can it teach us today?
Join us for a screening of Mario, a moving new documentary that explores the life and legacy of former New York Governor Mario Cuomo, followed by a conversation with journalist Ken Auletta, Madeline Cuomo, Steven Cohen, and filmmaker Teddy Kunhardt.
Directed by the Emmy Award-winning team of George, Peter, and Teddy Kunhardt and set against the backdrop of Ronald Reagan’s America, Mario traces Mario Cuomo’s journey from the son of Italian immigrants to the New York governor who championed government as a force for compassion. Bringing together archival footage, reflections from his family, and excerpts from his personal diaries, the film portrays a leader shaped by humility, intellect, and the struggles of his parents’ generation. From his early legal advocacy on behalf of working-class families to his years as governor to the soaring rhetoric that captured the imagination of Americans far beyond New York, Cuomo championed the idea that government could be a force for justice, opportunity, and compassion.
Following the screening, the filmmakers join Cuomo’s friends and family for a panel discussion about the man behind the public figure, the ideals that animated his leadership, and his lasting influence on New York.
