Gym Sued After Workout Music Leaves Upper East Side Neighbors Strained

Residents are complaining about thumping workout music.

UPPER EAST SIDE, NY — It might pump up gym-goers, but deafening workout music emanating from an Upper East Side fitness club has neighbors feeling the strain.

Residents of the Barbizon 63 tower on E. 63rd St. and Lexington Avenue are suing the Equinox gym that occupies their bulding's first three floors, claiming it's so loud that noise disturbs residents as many as two floors above it, according to reports.

According to a noise study, sounds measuring 68 decibels were recorded in a fourth-floor apartment unit in the building, the Daily News reported. One building resident told the New York Post that her apartment is "like living above a dance club."

"You would think an old building like this would have thicker walls and floors, but that’s not the case. So what ends up happening is you hear this non-stop stream of loud music and thump, thump, thumping of the bass," the woman, who spoke to the Post anonymously, said.

The Barbizon requested that a judge order the Equinox to keep the volume down and fine it $10,000 if the noise persists, according to both reports.
