UPPER WEST SIDE, MANHATTAN — Two people were found shot to death in a basement Upper West Side apartment Monday evening, police said.

Cops found a 72-year-old man and 50-year-old woman unconscious inside the basement apartment on West 87th Street just after 7 p.m. after getting a 911 call about people being shot, police said.

Both people had gunshot wounds and were pronounced dead by emergency responders at the scene, police said. A gun was recovered at the apartment.

Police are investigating the incident as a possible homicide.

Should they be deemed homicides, the deaths would be the fifth and sixth murders on the Upper West Side so far this year, up from just one murder last year, according to NYPD data.

At least three of the other four deaths this year have been stabbings, including a 48-year-old man killed in an Amsterdam Avenue building and a two people who were found dead at the Frederick Douglass Houses. There have been arrests in both cases.
