UPPER WEST SIDE, NY — Symphony Space has launched a $45 million fundraising campaign to renovate its longtime home on the Upper West Side, with plans to modernize the building, expand programming and return in time for its 50th anniversary in 2028.

The multi-disciplinary performing arts center, located at Broadway and 95th Street, said construction is expected to begin by the end of this year. During the renovation, the organization plans to present programming at venues across New York City.

"We are reshaping and reimagining our home in a way that aligns with our core values and underpins our commitment to being a vibrant, inclusive, and welcoming space—one that supports artists across disciplines and generations, opens our doors wider to communities across New York City and beyond, and invites everyone to participate," Kathy Landau, the executive director of Symphony Space, said. "We believe in a future where access, opportunity, and art are truly for all. This renovation is the pathway to that future."

The campaign, called ā€œBuilding Together,ā€ has already raised roughly 82 percent of its goal, according to the organization. The effort includes a mix of public and private funding, with New York City committing $15.5 million and New York State contributing $6.7 million so far.

Plans for the renovation include upgraded theaters, modern production equipment, and new flexible spaces for performances, classes, readings, and community events. The project also includes investment in new programming and growth of the organization’s endowment.

Rather than pause operations during construction, Symphony Space said it will host a "pop-up year" featuring events in all five boroughs. The initiative is intended to maintain connections with existing audiences while reaching new communities across the city.

The project is backed by a group of artists and writers, as well as elected officials who have supported public funding for the renovation.

"Symphony Space is one of New York City’s most treasured cultural institutions, and this renovation will ensure it continues to bring world-class programming and community connection to our neighborhood for generations to come," Councilmember Shaun Abreu said. "I can't wait to see the doors reopen for the 50th Anniversary."
