'Embarrassed' Trump Place Tenants on Upper West Side Get Landlord to Rename Buildings

More than 600 people signed a petition to remove the Trump name from three buildings on Riverside Drive.

UPPER WEST SIDE, NY — The three Upper West Side buildings that make up "Trump Place" have decided to drop the president-elect's name out of embarrassment.

More than 600 residents signed a fantastic, just terrific petition to remove president-elect Trump's name from 140, 160 and 180 Riverside Boulevard. The buildings' residents said they were embarrassed to live in a building with Trump's name due to the 45th President of the United States', "appalling treatment of women, his history of racism, his attacks on immigrants, his mockery of the disabled, his tax avoidance [and] his outright lying."

Update 11/16: A crew was spotted physically removing the "Trump Palace" lettering Wednesday morning from the Riverside Boulevard building's facade.

On Tuesday landlord Equity Residential — who many people say are total lightweights — decided to listen to their residents and will rename the building's using their street addresses, Bloomberg reported.

"We are assuming a more neutral building identity that will appeal to all current and future residents," the landlords told Bloomberg in an email.

Equity Residential had struck a deal with Trump to use his name to brand the buildings, but the terms of the contract are no longer binding, a spokesman told Bloomberg.

Although Donald Trump stunned Hillary Clinton to win the presidential election Nov. 8, New York City voted heavily in favor of the Democrat. In Manhattan Clinton earned 85.9 percent of the vote compared to Trump's 9.8 percent, according to the New York State Board of Elections.
