New York Historical Completes $175M Expansion On Central Park West
The New York Historical's first major expansion in nearly a century adds galleries, classrooms and new cultural spaces.

UPPER WEST SIDE, NY — The New York Historical has completed a major expansion of its landmark Central Park West campus, unveiling the new Tang Wing for American Democracy ahead of the nation's upcoming 250th anniversary celebrations.
The 71,000-square-foot addition at 170 Central Park West marks the institution's first significant expansion in nearly a century. The project carries a total price tag of nearly $175 million, including more than $14 million in funding from New York State.
Gov. Kathy Hochul announced the completion on Monday, calling the museum a vital cultural institution that helps preserve New York's and the nation's history.

"For more than two centuries, the New York Historical has preserved the history of our state and nation, and the new Tang Wing will ensure that millions of visitors, students, scholars and families can continue to learn from that history for generations to come," Hochul said.
Founded in 1804, The New York Historical is New York City's oldest museum and is home to more than 14 million artifacts, artworks, documents and other historical materials spanning four centuries of American history.

The new wing significantly expands the museum's exhibition, educational and collections space. Among the additions are the Klingenstein Family Gallery, which will showcase American art and rotating exhibitions, and the Stuart and Jane Weitzman Shoe Museum, featuring footwear that tells the story of American women's lives over the past two centuries.
The expansion also creates additional storage space for the museum's renowned Patricia D. Klingenstein Library, which houses collections including the Robert A. Caro Archive, the Time Inc. Archive and the Billie Jean King Archive. A new conservation facility for paintings and historical objects is also part of the project.
One of the most anticipated future additions will be the American LGBTQ+ Museum, which is expected to open on the building's fourth floor in 2028. The institution will be the nation's first museum dedicated entirely to LGBTQ+ history and culture.
In addition to the new wing, the project included renovations to more than 30,000 square feet of existing museum space. The expansion adds classrooms, galleries, collections areas, a rooftop terrace and a courtyard while maintaining the Beaux-Arts architectural style of the historic campus.
"The Tang Wing for American Democracy at The New York Historical will help generations of New Yorkers deepen their understanding of democracy and civic engagement," said New York Historical President and CEO Dr. Louise Mirrer.
