Trader Joe's Postpones Opening Of Second Upper West Side Store
The grocery store chain planned to open in the West 90s later this year, but now expects a 2018 opening.

UPPER WEST SIDE, NY — Popular grocery store chain Trader Joe's has pushed back plans to open a second Upper West Side location, according to a company announcement.
Trader Joe's announced this month that it "found a terrific location for a store in New York (93rd & Columbus)" and that "Our Crew is working hard so we can open our doors in 2018." If that sounds familiar to Upper West Side residents, it's because the chain made a near-identical announcement except with a "late 2017' opening date earlier this year.
The opening date listed for the West 90s store is "TBD in 2018," according to the company announcement.

The store will occupy 20,000 square feet in 670 Columbus Avenue, between West 92nd and 93rd streets. Trader Joe's negotiated its 20,000-square-foot lease in 2016, the Real Deal reported. The store will occupy ground floor and basement retail space at the base of an existing 30-story condo, according to the report.

The Upper West Side began buzzing about the store in 2014, when tipsters informed the West Side Rag they overheard rumors that Trader Joe's was looking to open a store in the West 90s. At the time the prospects of Trader Joe's opening a second Upper West Side location when other neighborhoods hadn't gotten a first store seemed unlikely.
