Westside Market On West 77th To Relocate, Report Says

Westside Market and its landlord were unable to come to an agreement to extend the lease for the West 77th Street store.

UPPER WEST SIDE, NY — WestSide Market on Broadway between West 76th and 77th street will be forced to relocate after the grocery store and its landlord failed to come to an agreement during lease extension negotiations, neighborhood blog the West Side Rag first reported.

The grocery store had planned to close on Nov. 30 either for renovations or in search of a new space, Ian Joskowitz, a manager at Westside Market's store on Broadway and West 110th Street, told Patch in October. The store and its landlord, Triumph Hotels, were deadlocked on lease negotiations for months.

Both sides were split over space, not rent, the West Side Rag reported. Westside Market desired to expand into a space next door owned by Triumph Hotels in order to operate a larger store, according to the report.

WestSide Market will try to find a new retail space nearby, and has already begun looking at spaces larger than its current store, Joskowitz told Patch in October.

"We will try to look as close to that location as possible, it's a great neighborhood and we've been there a long time," Joskowitz said.

The independent grocery store chain — which operates five stores on the Upper West Side — has been at West 77th street about 35 years, Joskowitz told Patch. In a neighborhood that is being proliferated by big-name grocery stores such as Trader Joes, Fairway and Whole Foods Market, the independent grocer can offer its customers a more personalized experience.
