Easy but Essential Holiday Home Safety Tips

Don't let holiday home hazards get in the way as you celebrate this season.

With the holidays come some home dangers that we aren’t used to watching for during the rest of the year. Fortunately, there are some easy steps you can take to make sure your home stays safe this month.

Don’t Use Frayed Cords

Never use frayed extension cords, light strands or appliance power cords. When you plug things in this season, check to make sure the cords are in good repair.

Never Overload Outlets

Don’t plug too many things into a single outlet and never connect multiple extension cords. Instead, use power strips where needed and longer extension cords to get the job done.

Watch Open Flames

Never leave open flames unattended and keep candles away from curtains, blankets and other things that can easily catch fire. Now is also a good time to make sure your fireplace and chimney are clean and working properly.

Keep the Thermostat Up

Turn your thermostat up a little higher when it’s very cold outside, especially at night and when you go out of town, to prevent frozen pipes. If you do experience frozen pipes, leaks or flooding, contact us. We are a plumber service on Long Island and offer leak detection and repair services.

Protect Children and Pets

Keep lights, candles and fragile ornaments out of reach so children or pets don’t accidentally pull them down on top of themselves. Also keep in mind that some plants, like poinsettias, are poisonous to pets.

Party Preparation

Make sure your porch and driveway are well lit when you host parties so your guests can safely park and won’t slip on ice. Also arrange open flames and fragile decorations in places where they won’t accidentally get knocked over.

Use Fresh Pine and Plant Décor

Dry trees, garlands, wreaths and holiday plants pose a major fire hazard. Keep plant décor fresh or opt for artificial decorations instead. Never place open flames near plant decorations.
