Fairfield Elementary Students Play 'Author Bingo'

Students got to experience lots of authors' work in this fun event.

From the Massapequa School District: The library shelves are filled with books by hundreds of authors at Fairfield Elementary School in the Massapequa School District, and first and second graders are trying to experience as many as they can.

Children are participating in author bingo as a way of expanding their reading horizons. Library media specialist Claire Mitchell said it is natural for children to have a few favorite authors and want to read as many of their books as possible. So she created a fun way for them to explore other published writers.

Each child has an author bingo sheet with different letters of the alphabet. When they check out a book from the library, they get to color in the letter that corresponds to the author’s last name. When they complete a row, they get a prize. Ms. Mitchell said that this activity also helps children learn how books in the library are organized, as fiction stories are arranged by the authors’ last names.
