Hochul Expected To Extend Mask Mandate In Schools: Report

One local lawmaker told Patch that "New Yorkers want our [lives] back for our businesses, way of life and for our children."

SEAFORD, NY — As the omicron is waning on Long Island, and throughout the state, Gov. Kathy Hochul is expected to address the mask mandate on Wednesday.

However, there is a good chance she will renew the controversial order for schools, the New York Post reports.

Some states are pulling back on the indoor mask requirement, including in New Jersey, where Gov. Phil Murphy announced on Monday the mandate will end on March 7.

The mandate was set to expire on Feb. 21.

Town of Hempstead Councilman Chris Carini (R-Seaford) disagrees with extending mask usage in schools.

"It's long past time to return to a sense of normalcy. The mental health effects on our children are well documented," Carini said.

Reports say Hochul would keep the mask order in place into March.

"New York is once again leading from behind, as we are destined to be the last state to lift the school mask mandates," Carini said. "We as New Yorkers want our [lives] back for our businesses, way of life and for our children."
