Massapequa Elementary School Closed After 3rd Coronavirus Case

An elementary school in Massapequa will be going remote on Thursday and Friday after a third student tested positive for COVID-19.

MASSAPEQUA, NY – An elementary school in Massapequa will be going remote on Thursday and Friday after a third student tested positive for COVID-19.

In a letter to parents on Wednesday, Superintendent Lucille Iconis said the student attends Fairfield Elementary School. The student's last day in school was Tuesday, Iconis said.

Out of an abundance of caution, Fairfield Elementary School will be closed on Thursday and Friday, and school instruction will be entirely remote.

The student who tested positive and is isolating at home until they have met all conditions to return, Iconis said in the letter, and the school district is working with the Department of Health to assist with contact tracing efforts.

The Department of Health will contact those considered to be close contacts as of Wednesday.

"Closing the building for the next two days will not only ensure that the District can thoroughly clean and disinfect the facility, but will better allow for continuity of instruction while contact tracing occurs," Iconis said in the letter. "Additionally, the District will work collaboratively with the DOH regarding any measures that may be necessary."
