Meet The Seaford Valedictorian And Salutatorian

The two have been friends since elementary school, and had pledged to graduate at the top of their class.

With a friendship that dates back to Seaford Harbor Elementary School, the top two graduates of Seaford High School’s class of 2018 couldn’t be happier for each other. Jordan Ament, with a grade point average of 103.99, was named the valedictorian, followed by Anna LaGrassa, the salutatorian, with a GPA of 101.08.

Ament will attend Northeastern University in the fall, where he is considering business or political science as possible majors. He said he likes the school’s co-op program, which would allow him to work with a company in his chosen field for six months.

LaGrassa will attend Fordham University’s Lincoln Center campus and said that while she will enter undecided, she is considering film and television as a major or minor. She is excited for the many opportunities that will be available in New York City.

The soon-to-be graduates both enrolled in 10 Advanced Placement courses. Ament said his favorite classes included AP statistics and English language and composition. LaGrassa cited AP U.S. history, English language and composition, and biology.

Ament played the clarinet in the band, was treasurer of the World Culture Club, a member of the National Honor Society and a freshmen mentor. He works at the Seaford Public Library. LaGrassa was president of Mathletes, played the baritone horn in the band, was a member of the Color Guard, National Honor Society, Best Buddies and Key Club, and a freshmen mentor. She works at Carvel and was a assistant for religious education at St. William the Abbot.

Both students served as tutors and volunteered at a soup kitchen in Hempstead. Among their favorite high school memories were a trip to Hawaii with the band and a physics trip to Six Flags Great Adventure, as well as spirit week. The pair said that in ninth grade they set a goal of becoming the top two graduates of their class. Ament attributed his success to a strong support system of friends, as well as the opportunities to take rigorous and challenging courses that helped prepare him for college and taught him time management. LaGrassa cited her drive and determination to always do her best, and also mentioned the supportive teachers in Seaford who made it a priority to get to know their students.

“Jordan and Anna are wonderful examples of students who entered high school with a goal of getting the most out of their educational experiences,” said Principal Scott Bersin. “They’re extremely bright and they are also extremely dedicated to growing their minds. They are perfect representatives of the Class of 2018.”
