Roller Derby Car Wash Fundraiser Held in Seaford
Long Island Roller Rebels wash cars outside Mad Topper Yogurt in benefit for all-female derby league.

Long Island’s first all-female derby league held a car wash fundraiser this past Sunday in Seaford just a stone’s throw away from where the dedicated area athletes practice for upcoming bouts.
The Long Island Roller Rebels, who compete on an international level in the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association, washed cars to raise proceeds for travel and uniform expenses outside Mad Topper Yogurt on Hicksville Road. The Rebels, who practice at United Skates in Seaford, have been skating for the past eight years since forming in 2005.

During Sunday’s fundraiser for the low price of $5, the Rebel skaters made cars shine from 1 to 5 p.m. while those attending enjoyed discounted organic frozen yogurt. Bellmore resident Lauren Madonia, who goes by the skater name "Captain Morgan" and is president of the Roller Rebels, said she expects there will be “another fundraiser toward the end of the season in August”.
Madonia explained what a complex and rapidly growing sport roller derby. As the burgeoning sport picks up speed, the rules become more intricate and the players more talented, she said.
