The Seaford Fire Department will purchase a new emergency generator to power its only firehouse and breathing equipment for firefighters to use at fire scenes thanks to a $600,000 state grant, the Seaford Herald reports.

The department will spend nearly 60 percent of the funds to purchase the generator for use during storms or other emergency situations when power is lost at the firehouse, at 2170 Southard Ave., the Herald reports.

Commissioner Frank Allaire told the Herald the firehouse has used the same generator for more than half a century.

“If we had hurricanes or other instances where people had to come to a safe place, we weren’t able to have them come to our firehouse, because we didn’t have the capability for a cooling center,” Allaire said. “So that was a high priority on our part to try and get some funding for that.”

State Sen. John Brooks secured $2.3 million from the state budget to distribute to fire districts in Senate District 8, including Seaford, according to the Herald.
