HEMPSTEAD, NY — In an effort to keep youngsters safe, the Town of Hempstead is resuming a program that gives parents peace of mind if their child goes missing.

Throughout the summer, the Child Safety ID Program will be set up at various locations. Fingerprinting and photographing services are provided free of charge, the town said on its website.

"The Child Safety ID Program has enjoyed great success at the Town of Hempstead for a number of years,” Town of Hempstead Supervisor Don Clavin said in a statement. "We hope that no parent has to endure a missing child, but if they do, this kit can greatly assist policing protocols in a timely manner."

The identification kit includes space to record medical information, dental records and other personal information for the child. Parents can also affix several strands of the child’s hair to maintain a DNA sample. Families can also make an appointment to visit the town clerk’s office at Hempstead Town Hall to complete their ID kit.
