WANTAGH, NY — Two Wantagh seniors have won a combined $3,000 in scholarship money after taking first and second place in a pedestrian safety competition, according to a report.
Olivia Vinson, a senior at Wantagh High School, took the top spot last month in the New York Coalition for Transportation Safety's Pedestrian Video Scholarship Competition, the organization announced in a Facebook post.
In the winning video, Vinson and two other girls demonstrate to the audience when it's safe — and not — to cross the street. The girls explain how to interpret the pedestrian walk sign and recommend looking both ways before crossing a street. They also talk about who has the right of way when a pedestrian is walking on a sidewalk in front of a car trying to leave a parking lot.

"Pedestrian safety is something a lot of people take for granted," she said.

Vinson and Flaherty were recognized at an event at St. Joseph Hospital.
