Wantagh Schools 'Concerned' About Lack Of State's Mask Guidance

Superintendent John McNamara said they are planning for the first day of school on September 1 with full in-person learning.

WANTAGH, NY — Without clear guidance from the state for schools this fall, it's left to the districts to determine what guidelines to follow.

Kathy Hochul, who takes over as governor on Tuesday, has said she plans to enforce a mask mandate in schools.

But with students returning in just a couple of weeks, time is running out to make decisions and let families know them.

Wantagh Schools Superintendent John McNamara composed an open letter to parents recently.

"Admittedly, nothing is more frustrating for parents to see school procedures revised repeatedly," McNamara wrote.

He said they didn't want to rush into protocols "in case New York State decides to weigh in on this at a later point."

Wantagh is planning to open schools for all students on September 1. Desk shields were removed from classrooms. Locker and locker rooms will be available for students.

As for the controversial topic of masks, McNamara said on the schools' website:

"Naturally, all of us are concerned about whether our schools will reopen with universal masking or optional mask use," McNamara wrote. "This decision, coupled with several other decisions, will be guided by the local infection rate, guidance from trained medical professionals, and any new mandates from the New York State Education Department."

McNamara also said face coverings will be required for school bus transportation.

Additionally, Wantagh schools "will not host any full year remote learning experiences for our students, as we continue to prioritize in-person instruction," the superintendent said.
