- Mayor Bill de Blasio's vaccine mandate for all Department of Education employees can now proceed after a federal panel lifted a temporary ban on the order late Monday night.
The mandate, which would require all 150,000 DOE employees to get a COVID-19 vaccinations, was originally scheduled to go into effect Monday morning. But a federal judge for the U.S. Court of Appeals in the Second Circuit filed a temporary injunction against the order last Friday and referred the case to a three-person panel for review. (amny) - Governor Kathy Hochul today honored 101 police officers who gave their lives in service to communities across New York State. The names of the officers, who served with 10 different agencies, were added to the New York State Police Officers Memorial, which was dedicated 30 years ago on the Empire State Plaza in Albany and now includes the names of 1,668 officers who died in the line of duty. More than 300 people attended the Remembrance Ceremony, during which Governor Hochul offered keynote remarks. (NYGOV)
- NYPD officers have arrested a registered sex offender in the attempted rape of a woman on a subway train in August. Sinke Zewge, 39, faces charges of attempted rape, robbery, assault, unlawful imprisonment, and criminal obstruction of breathing. Zewge is accused of approaching a woman on a northbound C train on August 3, demanding her property, slamming her into the train car seats, and strangling her until she lost consciousness temporarily. - A manhunt is underway after a suspect escaped from custody at Bellevue Hospital. The Department of Correction said 55-year-old Harry Maldonado slipped out just before 4 a.m. He was last seen wearing a hospital gown, black hat and sunglasses. The DOC said Maldonado was taken into custody last Thursday on charges of attempted burglary, larceny and parole violation. It's unclear why he was in the hospital. (CBS New York)
