George Washington Bridge Terminal Businesses To Hold Hiring Fair

Businesses participating in the hiring fair include Greyhound, New Jersey Transit, Marshalls, the Gap and Blink Fitness.

WASHINGTON HEIGHTS, NY — Several businesses in the newly-renovated George Washington Bridge Bus Terminal will hold a hiring fair this week in Washington Heights.

The fair will be held at the George Washington Bridge terminal Thursday from 4-8 p.m., according to a flyer for the event. Job seekers should enter the terminal at the Fort Washington Avenue and West 178th Street.

Businesses operating inside the terminal's retail concourse such as Marshalls, the Gap and Blink Fitness will be looking to fill open positions at the hiring fair. Greyhound and New Jersey Transit, which run service from the bus station, will also be attending the fair.

Representatives from the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey will also set up at the event and offer job seekers career advice.

The event is sponsored by many of Washington Heights and Inwood's local elected officials as well as Community Board 12, according to a flyer for the event. In August, community leaders and activists protested in front of the brand-new bus terminal to demand the businesses operating there upheld local hiring obligations.

Picketers stood outside the new Marshalls store — one of the big-box retailers that will be moving into the terminal — and chanted "What do we want? Jobs! When do we need them? Now!" and "Respect, respect, respect the community!"

In May, the Port Authority opened the renovated bus concourse at the George Washington Bridge terminal after two years of delays and nearly $20 million over budget. The new concourse features seating for 125 people, new Greyhound bus lines and greater handicap accessibility, officials said. But many of the retail and community spaces that were promised during the renovation have not opened.
