Word Up Community Bookshop/Libreria Comunitaria — 2113 Amsterdam Ave.

Tina C had high praise for this bookstore: "A quaint community, volunteer run bookshop that serves Washington Heights. I prefer books as oppose to e-book or tablet to feel the pages turn in my hand. This location is significantly better than its former space. Budget conscious used, good condition books for adults and children are available. Community meetings for all ages are frequently held here in Spanish and English."

Revolution Books — 437 Malcolm X Boulevard

Yelp reviewer Audrey N said: "This Harlem location offers a good choice of books about black struggles, feminism and LGBTQ issues...Hint? Have a great look outside in the pre-owned books' rack. Bought 3 pre-owned books for 10$.Go over there to get educated."

Fordham Comics — 390 E Fordham Road

It's in the Bronx, but it's one of the only comic book stores nearby. Reviewer Dan B likes this store's welcoming vibe: "In my experience, everywhere else besides Fordham Comics , the NYC comic shops consider you just another number. this guy gets it. I don't always agree with him! haha, but I totally respect and will return to buy books whenever I can make it up to Fordham."

Grandma’s Place — 84 W. 120th St.

Cheyney M says this is store is old school Harlem: "This is one of the last old school Harlem stores. I love this place, and they carry a wide variety of multicultural books, dolls and toys. The staff is "AMAZING"! One of the cashiers remembered I was looking for a certain book and when a shipment came in, she emailed me without any prompting to do so."
