Inwood Police Officer Killed in 9/11 Has Street Named in his Honor

A stretch of Park Terrace East has been co-named Bruce Reynolds Way to honor the police officer killed while rescuing others on 9/11.

INWOOD, NY — A street on Park Terrace East has been co-named in honor of an Inwood police officer killed while rescuing people from the World Trade Center in 9/11.

As of Friday, the stretch of Park Terrace East between Isham Park and West 215th Street will also be known as Bruce Reynolds Way. The co-naming took place during a ceremony attended by Port Authority police officers, Reynolds' family, State Sen. Adriano Espaillat and City Councilman Ydanis Rodriguez.

Rodriguez had sponsored legislation to co-name the street in Reynolds' honor.

"Officer Reynolds exemplified what we want all of our police officers to be: courageous, daring, responsible, with a drive to help others, especially when they are most in need," Rodriguez said. "It is a testament to his sacrifice — not only to our city but to our community that cherishes the garden he started — that I and so many others worked to make today possible."

The stretch of Park Terrace East named after Reynolds leads to Isham Park, an important place for Reynolds and his father, J.A. Reynolds. When the park was plagued by crime problems, J.A. Reynolds helped found the Park Terrace West Gang, which helped restore the park, according to the city parks department.

Bruce spent much time in the park during his youth and cultivated a community garden during his teenage years. J.A. Reynolds, at the age of 93, still helps maintain the garden, now known as Bruce Reynolds Garden.

Bruce Reynolds was killed 15 years ago when he rushed from his post on the George Washington Bridge to help rescue people from the World Trade Center.

Reynolds was a 15-year veteran of the Port Authority Police Department. During Friday's ceremony the department honored Reynolds with a fife and drum corps performance. His fellow officer Anthony Antinucci also spoke during the ceremony.
