WASHINGTON HEIGHTS, NY — One of Manhattan's largest theaters will celebrate turning almost a century old with a show from Grammy-award-winning singer and rapper Lauryn Hill, the theater announced.

Hill, who rose to fame as the only female member of The Fugees, will kick off the United Palace theater's 90th anniversary celebration with a concert on Feb. 22.

The show will be the first of several events that will commemorate the theater's long history.

United Palace — the fourth largest theater in Manhattan — first opened in 1930 as a vaudeville and deluxe movie house and has been an "inclusive spiritual center" since the United Palace of Spiritual Arts took it over in 1969.

"The United Palace may be turning 90, but our collective need to gather under one roof and surrender ourselves to the magic of spirit, creativity and imagination is just as important now as it was then, perhaps even more so." COO Rev. Robert Way told Broadway World about the celebration.

Hill's concert will be her debut performance at the United Palace theater.

The singer and songwriter started in the Fugees but has since launched a solo career, including the debut solo album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, which won a record-breaking five Grammy Awards.

"We are delighted to bring Ms. Lauryn Hill to Washington Heights and to the United Palace," CEO and Spiritual Director Rev. Heather Shea said to Broadway World. "It's a celebration and tribute to the past, as we acknowledge the present and launch the future."
