Man Charged In Highbridge Park Sex Attack And Robbery: Police

A Washington Heights resident is accused of attacking, kidnapping, and sexually abusing a woman in Highbridge Park, according to the NYPD.

WASHINGTON HEIGHTS, NY — A Washington Heights resident has been charged with 11 crimes Wednesday following an attack that took place in Highbridge Park over the summer, according to police.

On June 4, a woman was walking alone through the Washington Heights park at 3:15 p.m., near Edgecombe Avenue and West 165th Street, when a man grabbed her around the neck and forced her to perform a sexual act, police said.

The man then removed the woman's jewelry and fled the scene, according to police. The woman was transported to a hospital in stable condition.

On Wednesday, the New York Police Department arrested 39-year-old Washington Heights resident Lamont Tate in connection with the incident. He faces more than 10 charges, including robbery, assault, strangulation, criminal sex act, kidnapping, sex abuse, coercion, and unlawful imprisonment.

Tate has a history of crime, he was paroled in April after spending three years in state prison for a Bronx burglary and served time for a Brooklyn attempted robbery that he was paroled for in 2011, according to the New York Daily News.

He was arrested Wednesday in Lower Manhattan.
