WASHINGTON HEIGHTS, NY — Lace up the sneakers, grab a ball, and head down to the brand new soccer field at the Highbridge Park in Washington Heights.

The field was officially opened Tuesday morning with a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by Council Member Ydanis Rodriguez, Community Board 12 Chairman Eleazar Bueno, and community residents.

The synthetic turf field is closest to the 175th Street park entrance, and the space also includes newly paved walkways, a water fountain, and a collection of newly planted trees.

"Let's keep working together, let's make sure our children in Upper Manhattan get the same quality green space that any children on the Upper West Side and Upper East Side get," Rodriguez said during remarks at the field's opening.

Rodriguez also thanked Mayor Bill de Blasio, Park Department Commissioner Mitchell Silver, and the Inwood and Washington Heights residents for helping to bring the new field to the area.

The soccer field was funded with $4 million of the $30 million Rodriguez helped to secure with de Blasio for renovations to the Highbridge Park.

Highbridge Park stretches from West 155th Street to Dyckman Street, and also has multiple basketball courts, baseball fields, tennis courts, and other sporting spaces.
