Protest of Sherman Plaza Housing Development Planned for Saturday

Several groups in opposition to the Sherman Plaza project in Inwood plan to hold a demonstration Saturday afternoon.

INWOOD, NY — The Inwood community doesn't plan on going down without a fight regarding the re-development of the neighborhood. A number of neighborhood organizations are planning on holding a rally Sunday to protest the Sherman Plaza project, which seeks to build a high-rise apartment complex on Broadway and Sherman Avenue.

"Stop luxury high-rises and forced gentrification in Inwood," reads a flyer for the protest.

The protest groups claim that the development is part of a plan that will destroy "the last affordable working-class neighborhood in Manhattan," according to the flyer. The protest is being co-sponsored by several organizations including RENA, Inwood Preservation, Uptown for Bernie, Northern Manhattan Not for Sale and more.
