Rain Won’t Stop University Center's Labor Day BBQ

A Wet End of Summer Celebration Doesn't Change the Flavor From Outdoors to Indoors

On Labor Day in the Kingsbridge section, the weather did not cooperate with those planning a BBQ, but have no fear when Louie Ortega comes to work at University Center on Grand Avenue, he makes sure that it will be alright. Mr. Ortega, the head chef at this four-star 46-bed nursing home and rehabilitation facility, knew just what to do and it did not involve an umbrella. He brought the party and the BBQ indoors, to the delight of the residents and staff.

That man always has the right answers,” said Tonkya De Havia, Recreation Director at University Center. “People were sad when they saw the rain coming down and it looked like it wasn’t going to let up any time soon, but Louie knew just what to do and how to do it.

Everyone enjoyed the end of the summer, Labor Day burgers, hot dogs, chicken, coleslaw and watermelon. Ice cream and fruit come later for dessert and the rain came down on and off.
