Uptown Zip Code Has Most Reported Coronavirus Cases In Manhattan
A Washington Heights zip code had 308 confirmed coronavirus cases, more than any other zip code in the borough, new data shows.

WASHINGTON HEIGHTS, NY — A Washington Heights zip code has the most reported coronavirus cases in Manhattan, according to new Health Department data about the pandemic.
Zip code 10032, which extends from West 153rd Street to West 173rd Street, had 308 positive cases of coronavirus as of March 31, meaning 56 percent of the 548 people tested for the virus tested positive, according to Health Department data.
The 308 case-count is more than any other zip code in Manhattan, but is many times less than some of the hardest-hit neighborhoods in the city, according to the data.
About a quarter of the city's 179 zip codes had a higher case count than 308, with the most cases of any single zip code reported in Corona, Queens, which had 947 cases. The maps appear to show that Queens and Brooklyn have been hit hardest by the pandemic.

The case-count is part of new data and two maps New York City released Wednesday that breaks down COVID-19 case number ranges and percentages of patients testing positive as of March 31 by zip code. The data is based only on those who have received tests, which have become increasingly difficult to procure.

The Health Department released the map days after reporters hurled pleas for greater transparency at Mayor Bill de Blasio, who has argued it would be irresponsible to release quickly-changing data on anything more specific than a borough level.
Other Uptown zip codes were not far behind 10032. Zip code 1033, which extends up to West 187th Street, had 264 reported cases while zip code 10040, which ends at Dyckman Street, had 208.
The least cases in the two neighborhoods were in Inwood's northern zip code 10034, where there were just 108 cases.
All of the Washington Heights and Inwood zip codes, except 10034, fell into the higher percentage brackets, meaning more than half of the people tested for coronavirus came back with a positive result.
Washington Heights was among the first New York City neighborhoods to have ties to the coronavirus pandemic. A student and a rabbi who taught at Yeshiva University were among the first New York cases of the virus earlier this month.
