An area in Washington Heights has the highest coronavirus rate of any ZIP code in Manhattan, according to city data.

UPPER MANHATTAN, NY — A ZIP code that makes up parts of Inwood and Washington Heights has the highest coronavirus rate in Manhattan, according to the most recent city data.

The coronavirus rate of people tested in the 10040 ZIP code is 8.43 percent, making it the only ZIP code in Manhattan over the 8 percent mark.

The ZIP code that includes the northern section of Washington Heights and parts of Inwood joins nearly 30 ZIP codes throughout the five boroughs with a coronavirus rate of over 8 percent.

The data, which shows COVID-19 testing results for every New York City ZIP code between Dec. 18 and Dec. 24, reveals that the positivity rates in all four ZIP codes that make up Inwood and Washington Heights are relatively high.

While the rest of the Inwood and Washington Heights ZIP codes don't have rates quite as high as 10040, the three other ZIP codes in the two neighborhoods remain near Manhattan's top rates during the period.

  • 10034 — Inwood: 1,283 people tested, 83 new cases, 6.47 percent positive
  • 10033 — Washington Heights: 1,917 people tested, 153 new cases, 7.98 percent positive
  • 10032 — Washington Heights (South): 2,173 people tested, 121 new cases, 5.57 percent positive

The New York City coronavirus rate hit 7 percent on Sunday, with 3,015 new cases throughout the five boroughs.

Both Mayor Bill de Blasio and Gov. Andrew Cuomo recently warned of a spike in cases due to gatherings during the holiday season.
