New York Presbyterian in Washington Heights Ranked 6th Best Hospital in the Country

U.S. News and World Report on Tuesday released its list of the country's best hospitals, naming one Washington Heights hospital.

WASHINGTON HEIGHTS, NY — U.S. News and World Report on Tuesday released its list of the best hospitals in the country, giving one Washington Heights health care institution high marks. New York Presbyterian Hospital was named to the study's "honor roll," signifying its status as one of the 20 best hospitals in the United States.

New York Presbyterian, which has its Columbia University Medical Center based in Washington Heights, was named the 6th best hospital in the United States by the report.

The hospital scored top five rankings in several specialties including cardiology and heart surgery, diabetes and endocrinology, nephrology, neurology and neurosurgery, psychiatry, and rheumatology. Of the nine medical procedures rated in the report the hospital received a high performing grade except for knee replacement, where it was rated with an average grade.

Only two one other hospitals in New York City made the honor roll, NYU Langone Medical Center in Midtown and Mount Sinai, which has locations on the Upper East Side and Morningside Heights.

To compile the rankings, U.S. News and World Report used several different objective measurements such as patient survival, number of patients and staffing numbers. The publication also used survey data from qualified physicians, who were asked to name the top five hospitals in their specialty.

VA and military hospitals were not included, the publication said, because the federal government is reluctant to release performance data from those hospitals. Procedures and conditions that were considered included hip replacement and heart failure.

Hospitals were also ranked according to these 16 specialties:

  2. Cardiology and heart surgery
  3. Diabetes and endocrinology
  4. Ear, nose and throat
  5. Gastroenterology and GI surgery
  6. Geriatrics
  7. Gynecology
  8. Nephrology
  9. Neurology and neurosurgery
  10. Orthopedics
  11. Pulmonology
  12. Urology
  13. Ophthalmology
  14. Psychiatry
  15. Rehabilitation
  16. Rheumatology
