Washington Heights Ranked Just the 81st Best Neighborhood in New York, Inwood Left Out of Top 100

WASHINGTON HEIGHTS-INWOOD, NY — Is it possible that the Washington Heights and Inwood have been overrated? Probably not, but neighborhood residents may be surprised to see where their community ranks in a recent study of the best neighborhoods in New York City.

A new study on the Best Neighborhoods in New York City conducted by Niche.com ranked Washington Heights and Inwood at 81st and 103rd respectively.

Niche praised Washington Heights for its diverse makeup, outdoor activity space and health and fitness, but panned it for crime and jobs. It was more of the same for Inwood, which received high marks for nightlife and outdoor activities, but poor grades for crime and public school options.

For those scratching their heads and wondering how Niche came up with its rankings, they can take a look at the Niche's methodology for the categories they take into consideration when ranking a neighborhood.

The list was especially kind to Manhattan neighborhoods, including nine of the Top 10, but favored neighborhoods below 34th Street. In fact, the study showed some serious bias against Upper Manhattan. Washington Heights' and Inwood's neighbor to the south, Harlem, was ranked No. 144.
