5th Grader Earns Community Hero Award
"I thank my parents for always teaching me to be kind."

WESTHAMPTON BEACH, NY — A fifth grader was honored for her commitment to giving back.
The Westhampton Free Library chose Marelin Chucuy Alvarado, a fifth-grader at Westhampton Beach Elementary School, as its December community hero during a ceremony at the library’s regular board meeting on Dec. 19, according to a release.
Chucuy Alvarado was selected for the honor by the library’s tween department.

“Marelin shows us that it is easy to make a difference in the lives of others by doing simple things,” said Library Director Danielle Waskiewicz. “We are thrilled to honor her.”
A dedicated student, Chucuy Alvarado always sets an example for others by completing her homework and classwork and fully participating in class, the library said. She is also always kind to her classmates and assist them with their work, and is a member of the safety patrol.

At home, she continues to be helpful, assisting her mom with her new baby brother and reading to her sister, those who chose her for the honor said.
“I really am grateful for this award,” said Chucuy Alvarado. “I thank my parents for always teaching me to be kind.”
The library’s yearlong Community Hero recognition program pays tribute to community members who embody the spirit of giving. The honorees are celebrated at the library board’s monthly meetings.
