Bites Nearby: Dave's Bun 'n' Burger

'Always good for a yolk.'

Overview: Be prepared to follow the rules when dining at Dave’s Bun ‘n’ Burger. A big sign in the window warns patrons to turn off cell phones. Hanging from the ceiling are the instructions to wait to be seated and warning single diners to stay away from the booths. Cash only.

Decor: An old-fashioned luncheonette with regulars filling the stools at the counter and the booths lining the wall. It's the lunch place for local real estate agents, attorneys taking a break from the courtroom and village employees. More than one patron refers to the place--tongue in cheek--as 21 East, after the swank dinner club in Manhattan. It’s more function over form with brick face walls and blue vinyl seats.

Food: Breakfast consists of diner standards at very reasonable prices. Two eggs with toast, home fries or French fries will set you back $3.45, add 30¢ for poached and 50¢ for soft boiled. Omelets run from $3.75 for plain to $8 for the top-of-the-line mozzarella and salami. The lunch menu is topped by their quarter-pound charcoal-grilled burgers ($4.25 with extras for cheese, bacon, etc.). A half-pound burger is $6.50. Hot dogs are $2.75. Hot plates include chopped steak with onions ($10.95), fried clam strips ($8), fried chicken breast ($8.25) and “breaded flounder moist and tender” ($8). Club sandwiches are $7.95.  Desserts are a rotating selection of homemade pies. The newish dinner menu has an iceberg wedge salad ($6), grilled marinated pork chop ($12), fish and chips ($10) and beef stew ($10.50). Dave’s bun and burger is not fancy, but they have it down. It’s busy for a reason.
