Local Woman Fundraising For Mission Trip To Help Others Overseas

"Many of these patients are children with special needs and women with low socioeconomic status who have limited means for health care."

WESTHAMPTON BEACH, NY — The countdown is on as a young woman fundraises for a mission trip to help others in need a world away.

A GoFundMe page created by Meaghan Hames, "Student PT Mission Trip To Africa," has raised $1,630 of its $3,400 goal so far.

"A few of my classmates and I from the Stony Brook University physical therapy program's Class of 2018 are wanting to go on a mission trip to Tanzania-Africa," she wrote.

The purpose of the trip, Hames said, is to spread medical knowledge and awareness about physical therapy.

Her group will be traveling through different parts of Tanzania and working in different clinics with many patients.

"Many of these patients are children with special needs and women with low socioeconomic status who have limited means for health care and resources. Tanzania is very far behind the USA in medicine, technology, and education so they need our help," she said.

The trip will span two weeks in August 2017, she said, and any donations are greatly appreciated.

Donations will be used towards flights, lodging, meals, and transportation.

"I will be spending my career working with patients in the USA, but I could not think of a better way to use my time as a student and my skills than to help those in another country," she said.
